New Barnes and Noble eReader Announcement on May 24th

According to a SEC federal filing by Barnes and Noble, the book retailer is planning on announcing a brand new eBook reader to the mass market. It is unclear by the filling if the new eReader will replace any of the existing Nook devices or add another to the family. However, we believe the…. new eReader will be an updated version of the original Nook which features a large e-ink display for viewing literature and a smaller color lcd screen on the bottom allowing the user to select the book by coloured cover pages. The new advancements in e-ink such as quicker refresh rates are the upgrade many customers are waiting for.

The Nook Color, the alternative full capacitive LCD eReader, recently received an update for the Operating System to Android 2.2 Froyo with Flash support. Due to the close proximity of the upgrade, a new revision of the Nook Color is unlikely. A Honeycomb Nook would not be feasible despite the Nook Color being a great tablet. Barnes and Nobles main focus is on e-reading and while Honeycomb is a great tablet oriented OS, it would not bring anything new that could have otherwise been written for Android 2.2.
